Despite selling over 70 million records and putting their name to more than 50 UK chart singles, all five members of a hit 70s band now face bankruptcy.
The original five members of Reggae band ‘UB40’ - Robin Campbell, Brian Travers, Terence Wilson, Norman Hassan and James Brown - are all reportedly being chased by liquidators after the state of their finances was flagged as a serious issue by the Inland Revenue. The News of The World reported that legal proceedings were due to begin on Monday 14th February at Birmingham Crown Court but so far no further information has been released. It has been said though that the legal action will be directed at their record label, Dep International.Ironically, UB40 was named in reference to the document issued to people claiming unemployment benefit from the DHSS at the time of the band’s formation and ‘UB40’ in fact stands for Unemployment Benefit, Form 40.Since they were formed in 1978 in Birmingham, the band has been portrayed as an icon for the British working class, as all five members worked their way into the music business through playing in the local pubs in Birmingham. Today however, it is difficult for any of these fans to understand how one of the world’s best selling bands, the creators of hit single ‘Red Red Wine’, could have dwindled away their money. Full details of how the band ended up in this position are likely to come to light after court proceedings but rumours abound that whatever went on behind closed doors was enough to end the prospect of the band ever playing together again. When Robin Campbell's brother, former lead singer Ali Campbell, left the band in 2008 he vowed never to play with his Red Red Wine bandmates again.Manchester debt firm is liquidated owing creditors over £2.2m
