An elderly woman from Fleet Hargate, Leicestershire, is reportedly seeking debt help in order to pay for care for her two sons, both of whom have Huntington’s Disease.
According to a report published in the Spalding Guardian, 70-year-old Christine Collins has sought debt help from Lincolnshire County Council in order to cover the costs of the care her two sons Paul (41) and Clive (45) need. Both men suffer from Huntington’s Disease, a degenerative condition which could leave them needing full-time support with day-to-day activities such as eating, washing and using the bathroom.
Mrs Collins has arranged care for the brothers in the mornings and despite having arthritis, she looks after them at night. However, she now desperately needs to arrange care for them between the hours of 4pm and 9pm, and has found herself plunged into debt problems trying to pay for the support.
The council are said to be providing the 70-year-old with a ‘personal budget’ which will cover the costs of the care, but the money has not yet arrived despite months of waiting. Until it does, Mrs Collins is funding the care herself, and has amassed debt problems to the tune of £4,000 so far.
Speaking to the Spalding Guardian, Mrs Collins said:
“I have used £4,000 of my own money and next month I will have to have an overdraft – I can’t do without the care because I am disabled myself.
“I don’t sleep at night through worrying about this.”
